i made the cornrows: portraits of Black Nebraskans is Kat Wiese's first major solo exhibition and an investigation of intersectional identities among African diasporic Nebraskans. The exhibition opened April 1st, 2022 at Kiechel Fine Art in Lincoln Nebraska and closed May 15th, 2022. Through multimedia paintings and prints generated in response to interviews and cooperative photoshoots, sitters are both seen and heard. The works honor the specificity of individual experiences by rendering acutely detailed figures, while undermining their realism with spaces emphasizing intangible or invisible realities. The exhibition includes a catalog and interactive audio experiences that bring the voices of the subjects to life.

The following catalog was designed by Lincoln-based graphic designer, Adria Chilcote. This catalog was generously funded in part by the Nebraska Arts Council mini grant and the NAC Individual Artist Fellowship.
