Frederico Froibel paste up mural featuring Imagine Uhlenbrock, 2025

I spent two weeks in Mexico this January working with my good friend David Manzanares on a workshop with public school teachers in Oaxaca. The workshop took place in Collantes, an Afro-Mexican community where I was able to share a portrait and language from interviews with Imagine Uhlenbrock.

It was amazing to walk participants through my history and the process behind the portrait series I began in 2021. Teachers reflected on ideas that were central to their understanding of themselves and then shared those with one another and made portraits of their partner. To see the enthusiasm they brought to this process was incredibly gratifying.

A paste up of Imagine and her quote, "the most radical thing you can do as a black person, is prioritize your joy" are now mounted permanently outside the Kindergarten where our workshop was held. Thank you so much to Cencos Sección Veintidós for making this possible!
